Wellies was established by Alex Tate and his Wife Lia Tate in Feb 2014.
Alex & Lia both came from a hospitality and catering background, working in the industry since age 16. They met working for a local gastro pub/restaurant chain Brewkitchen in 2009 and continued working together for Sheffield catering company Fretwell Downing (Owner's of the Maynard Hotel, and operators of Whirlowbrook Hall until 2012). Alex & Lia went moved on to work for Millhouses Catering at Millhouse's park cafe before taking the opportunity to take on the Charles Street unit which is now Wellies.
Alex & Lia had been on the lookout for the opportunity to open a restaurant or cafe if their own when the former Wellies - Nibblers closed down in summer 2013. Alex & Lia jumped at the opportunity, but there was a lot of work ahead before Wellies could open for business. The shop was left in need of a lot of work and so it remained closed for a 3-month full refurb (Nov 2013-Feb 2014).
Wellies grand opening was on 20th Feb 2014 and has gone from strength to strength since.
Wellies are about freshly made and prepared food, which is why we chose our tagline lovingly made food. Our food and drink are locally sourced wherever possible so we carefully selected our suppliers to ensure great quality. We always aimed to offer simple, honest food and keep it good value to customers. Our all-day breakfasts are one of our most popular offerings, we use local meat from Owen Taylors butchers and bread from Sheffield bakery, Turners.
